Time Critical

Every second counts — practice boosts confidence

Chain of Survival

1

Recognize

Identify cardiac arrest & call 112

2

CPR

Start chest compressions immediately

3

Defibrillate

Use AED as soon as available

4

Advanced Care

Continue until EMS arrives

CPR Steps (Hands-Only CPR)

1

Check for Response

Tap the person's shoulders firmly and shout "Are you okay?" If there's no response, call 112 immediately or ask someone nearby to call.

2

Check for Breathing

Look for chest movement for no more than 10 seconds. If the person is not breathing or only gasping, begin CPR immediately.

3

Position Your Hands

Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest (on the breastbone). Place your other hand on top and interlace your fingers. Keep your arms straight and shoulders directly over your hands.

4

Start Chest Compressions

Push hard and fast! Compress at least 2 inches (5 cm) deep. Rate: 100-120 compressions per minute (think of the song "Stayin' Alive"). Allow the chest to fully recoil between compressions.

💡 Tip: Push to the beat of "Stayin' Alive" by Bee Gees

5

Continue Until Help Arrives

Don't stop CPR until:

  • Emergency medical services take over
  • An AED is ready to use
  • The person starts breathing normally
  • You are too exhausted to continue (get someone else to take over)

How to Use an AED

1 Turn On the AED

Open the case and press the power button. The AED will give voice instructions.

2 Expose the Chest

Remove clothing from the chest. If wet, dry the chest. If hairy, use the razor in the AED kit.

3 Attach the Pads

Peel off the backing and place pads exactly as shown in the diagram on the pads.

4 Let AED Analyze

Stop CPR. Make sure no one is touching the person. The AED will analyze the heart rhythm.

5 Deliver Shock (if advised)

If the AED says "Shock advised," make sure everyone is clear and press the shock button.

6 Resume CPR

Immediately resume CPR after the shock. Continue following the AED's instructions.

âš ī¸ Important Notes

  • â€ĸ You cannot harm someone by using an AED - it will only deliver a shock if needed
  • â€ĸ Good Samaritan laws protect people who provide emergency care in good faith
  • â€ĸ Any attempt at CPR is better than no attempt - don't be afraid to try
  • â€ĸ If you're unsure, the 112 operator can guide you through CPR over the phone
